Seed vs. Sod

Both work. The “right” choice depends on timeline, sun, and your tolerance for establishment work. This guide is designed to prevent the most common disappointment: choosing the right product for the wrong site or season.

Pick sod when…

  • You need fast green coverage. Great for erosion control and quick curb appeal.
  • You want fewer weeds at start. (Not zero—just less bare-soil opportunity.)
  • You can commit to watering. The first 2–3 weeks matter a lot.

Pick seed when…

  • You have time. Seed is cheaper but slower and more sensitive to timing.
  • You’re okay with a longer “ugly middle.” Thin phases are normal.
  • You can protect it. Washouts, birds, and foot traffic are common failure modes.

Timing (simple)

  • Fescue: fall is usually the best establishment window.
  • Warm-season grasses: establish best when they’re actively growing (late spring/summer).
  • Shade areas: are harder no matter what. Consider zoning to beds/groundcover.
